THE BLESSING OF THE BOATS AT CROMANE 2012

Monday evening at 5pm saw the annual 'Blessing Of The Boats' at Cromane beach. As always, it attracted  boats, both large and small, as well as a good crowd of locals, who always support this wonderful event in a community so well known for its fishing.
This year I was lucky enough to get an invitation from the Teahan family, along with my photo mentor Michael Herrmann, to photograph the ceremony from the deck of their mussel trawler, and we thank the family for their kind invitation. The following are the photos taken by me, the majority being from the boat, with a few from the shore.

Cromane Trawlers nosed onto the beach for the Blessing ceremony. These Trawlers have a very flat bottom hull that enables them to operate in very shallow waters.

Liam O'Connor and his Oyster boat! Another boat built especially to operate in only inches of water, the outboard motor fits on a rail system that allows the engine to be raised up as the water gets shallower!

Take a bow!!

More small boats arriving.

On board the Teahan Trawler

Arthur McCarthy's immaculately painted trawler, looks like brand new.

Boats keep the engines running throughout the ceremony to keep them against the shore!

The Cromane Seine boat arriving, alongside Pattie O'Sullivans Crab boat. This is a very heavy boat that competes in rowing regattas with similar boats from all over the South West!

The little green boat is Donie McCarthys Lobster boat.

Locals gathering and awaiting the ceremony! Jacks Coastguard Station can be seen in the background.

Father Flemming setting up to give the Blessing and a mass.

The future of the Teahan family.

'naomh paoraig' the Teahans latest oyster boat.

Father Flemming starting the ceremony.

Father Flemming carry out the boat blessing to each vessel.

Taken through the anchor hatch!

Engines and generators humming from below.

Admiral of the fleet, Tadgh Fox looking on...Lol (sorry admiral if I spelt your name wrong?)

Well done lads the cup winners for this year!

Mens senior crew! don't mess with these boys they are all so strong, and most are also Cromane GAA footballers.

All over and heading for the moorings! Thanks for the day lads!
